ABOUT THE BOOK
People stranded, schools shut, roads clogged, and electricity snapped. Floods can bring life to a standstill. India witnesses floods with alarming regularity, and this book is a chronicle of some of these disasters. It casts a detailed eye on the how and why of a fearsome calamity that’s as much human-made as it is natural, with a special focus on the environmental destruction it causes.SNAPSHOT REVIEW
- In recent years TERI has produced some fantastic books on the environment and human interaction with it, both fiction and non-fiction. This one about floods is very relevant in light of the fact that floods and tsunamis have wreaked havoc in India in the recent past.
- There is a lot of information packed into the book, from how floods are caused, the areas in India prone to floods, the effects of urbanization and loss of green cover, how floods affect people’s lives (disease, homelessness, loss of life, etc.), how floods can be prevented.
- There is even a section on tips to survive floods and a glossary of terms.
- Information is broken up into digestible chunks, with plenty of photographs that show exactly what floods can do. There are bits of interesting trivia thrown in as well.
