Nikoo’s Paintbrush by Gurpreet Kaur is about a boy with dreaming eyes who paints things to life. The story follows in the magical tradition of the 1955 classic Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson.

One day, Nikoo reads an adventure story to his striped cat, Sher Singh, about a king and sailors in a big blue sea. After Nikoo reads out the story, he decides to take it further. He paints an ocean, some fish, a boat and other things he needs for his own adventure at sea. Suddenly, his drawings swirl, come alive, create a new world, and Nikoo falls into his own painting! What happens next… ah well, you better pick up the book!

Gurpreet Kaur’s lively watercolours do more than just illustrate the action. They add details that will intrigue the reader, especially the way in which the cat is hidden or revealed on each page. The delightful story and illustrations will definitely interest readers ages three and older, and readers who are five or six will enjoy reading it by themselves.

“For a teacher or librarian faced with dozens of books to read, a good book review website is as essential as maps are for geographers.”

Anil Menon - Writer

“Indian children’s books rarely get the kind of publicity they deserve in the popular or social media. Websites like Goodbooks plug the gap by not letting a single Indian children’s book of merit slip through the cracks. Most people would not even know about the books available in the market if not for a resource like this.”

“Book review sites like Goodbooks are a wonderful resource for locating theme-based or issue-based children’s books to enrich the learning experience in the classroom and at home.”
