THE DISAPPEARING BEACH AND OTHER NATURE STORIES

THE DISAPPEARING BEACH AND OTHER NATURE STORIES

ABOUT THE BOOK

Can a smelly monster threaten a town? Or tiny creatures organise a river clean-up? Polythene bags, glass bottles and sheets of paper need new looks and a homesick mudskipper tells stories about his mangrove home. The Disappearing Beach and Other Nature Stories is a collection of nine tales about problems affecting our environment and with useful clues on how to tackle them.

SNAPSHOT REVIEW

  • Each short story in this book focuses on environmental issues we face today – from recycling and waste disposal to natural phenomena and disappearing habitats.
  • The stories are accompanied with colourful illustrations – nothing spectacular, but they break up the text nicely.
  • While teaching through stories is a great idea, the stories themselves are rather tame and simplistic.
  • The writing is lacklustre and most of the stories are set in contexts that make it convenient for adults to lecture children on environmental issues.

CONCLUSION

TERI has a great collection of books to help children understand the environmental threats faced by our planet, but a lot more work is needed to develop quality content that will engage young readers meaningfully.

“For a teacher or librarian faced with dozens of books to read, a good book review website is as essential as maps are for geographers.”

“Indian children’s books rarely get the kind of publicity they deserve in the popular or social media. Websites like Goodbooks plug the gap by not letting a single Indian children’s book of merit slip through the cracks. Most people would not even know about the books available in the market if not for a resource like this.”
