GOODPICKS FROM GOODBOOKS – 30 MAY 2019

Award-winning author Venita Coelho’s latest book came out just this month, and we’ve already gotten our hands on a copy! In this piece in a local Goa newspaper, the Herald, read about how All of Me was conceived and written, and get a sneak peak into the plot of this delicious new historical adventure.

How can books help us have conversations about emotionally complex issues? In My Heart, a picture book by Nandana Dev Sen, illustrated by Ruchi Mhasane, is a story of adoption, and how parents and children in adopted families can forge bonds as strong as those formed by blood. In this insightful interview in Scroll, we hear from the author on how she went about writing about this sensitive and largely taboo issue.

There are many more stories that stay untold—or unread—because of the issue of language. A new translation initiative called the Indian Novels Collective is aiming to translate books from regional languages into English so that today’s children can access the works that their parents grew up reading. Read more about the project and the ideas behind it in this article in the Non-Profit Quarterly.

Finally, The Indian Express has featured a fresh new roundup of the latest kidlit releases in India. Have a look, and get shopping!

“For a teacher or librarian faced with dozens of books to read, a good book review website is as essential as maps are for geographers.”

“Indian children’s books rarely get the kind of publicity they deserve in the popular or social media. Websites like Goodbooks plug the gap by not letting a single Indian children’s book of merit slip through the cracks. Most people would not even know about the books available in the market if not for a resource like this.”
