SHABANA AND THE BABY GOAT

SHABANA AND THE BABY GOAT

ABOUT THE BOOK

Shabana loves Kajri and Kajri loves Shabana and they are best friends forever! The problem begins when Kajri the baby goat starts to chew everything in sight – Dadi’s palak, Masterji’s book and even Phuppo Jammo’s burkha! Now Shabana must come up with a plan to put Kajri’s chewing skills to good use.

SNAPSHOT REVIEW

  • A delightful story of friendship between a young girl and a baby goat that warms the cockles of the heart. Both the protagonists, Shabana and Kajri, are absolutely adorable and inseparable. The antics they get up to are sure to delight the youngest of readers.
  • Writing less and saying more is author Samina Mishra’s forte! There’s a lightness of touch and brevity of expression in her writing that suits the picture book format very well.
  • Details of the everyday lives of Shabana and her family are delightfully interwoven into the text. It is not often that we see diverse people and cultures represented in our books for young readers, and on this count too, the book deserves a thumbs up.
  • Visual text and expressive illustrations combine to make you smile as you turn every page. The illustration of a smiling Shabana wearing a headscarf on the very first page of the book sets the tone of happiness that promises to follow. Roshini Pochont’s illustrative style compliments the text, making the places more real and the characters more relatable, thus adding to the reading pleasure of the book.

CONCLUSION

‘Main, main,’ go Kajri and Shabana right through this charming picture book; ‘main hoon na, main hoon na,’ this book should, from every child’s bookshelf!

“For a teacher or librarian faced with dozens of books to read, a good book review website is as essential as maps are for geographers.”

“Indian children’s books rarely get the kind of publicity they deserve in the popular or social media. Websites like Goodbooks plug the gap by not letting a single Indian children’s book of merit slip through the cracks. Most people would not even know about the books available in the market if not for a resource like this.”
