THE RAGE OF WATERS

THE RAGE OF WATERS

ABOUT THE BOOK

People stranded, schools shut, roads clogged, and electricity snapped. Floods can bring life to a standstill. India witnesses floods with alarming regularity, and this book is a chronicle of some of these disasters. It casts a detailed eye on the how and why of a fearsome calamity that’s as much human-made as it is natural, with a special focus on the environmental destruction it causes.

SNAPSHOT REVIEW

  • In recent years TERI has produced some fantastic books on the environment and human interaction with it, both fiction and non-fiction. This one about floods is very relevant in light of the fact that floods and tsunamis have wreaked havoc in India in the recent past.
  • There is a lot of information packed into the book, from how floods are caused, the areas in India prone to floods, the effects of urbanization and loss of green cover, how floods affect people’s lives (disease, homelessness, loss of life, etc.), how floods can be prevented.
  • There is even a section on tips to survive floods and a glossary of terms.
  • Information is broken up into digestible chunks, with plenty of photographs that show exactly what floods can do. There are bits of interesting trivia thrown in as well.

CONCLUSION

Another timely volume by TERI that touches upon the ecological mess that humans have created. The information is presented in a straightforward manner and is well-organized.

“For a teacher or librarian faced with dozens of books to read, a good book review website is as essential as maps are for geographers.”

“Indian children’s books rarely get the kind of publicity they deserve in the popular or social media. Websites like Goodbooks plug the gap by not letting a single Indian children’s book of merit slip through the cracks. Most people would not even know about the books available in the market if not for a resource like this.”
